Lock29

Food and culture lovers are in for a treat as work begins to develop Lock29 ready for its Spring 2020 opening right in the heart of Banbury on the historic Lock 29 of Oxford Canal. The enabling works have now begun in the 17,000 Sq Ft ex BHS unit in Castle Quay shopping centre. Innovation and sustainability are driving the project and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Visitors to Lock29 will get to enjoy the very best in food and drink both locally and from throughout England thanks to our partnership with Happerley. For Lock29 will be home to the National Centre of Food and Drink Provenance - a space where all the food and drink producers will bear the Gold Standard Happerley Transparency. You will be able to meet the producers, discover the journey of your food from farm to your plate and celebrate provenance.

What will this look like?

There will be 7 street food units, a coffee shop, a bar, 4 deli units including artisan bread and cheese, a butcher and so much more. Visitors will get to enjoy local chefs running pop-ups, workshops with the producers and seasonal food demos. Come hungry and leave inspired.

Lock29 is more than just food and drink. Lock29 is a community destination that will showcase outstanding talent from the region as well as providing a space for events, live music, workshops….. For, as well as a flexible events space in the heart of the Lock29, there will also be a boutique cinema to enhance the cultural experiences on offer here in Banbury.

Lock29’s Manager is Chris Catford who says, “I’m am very proud to be involved in such an exciting and inspiring project. As part of Cherwell District Councils fantastic investment into Banbury, Lock29 will sit proudly in the thick of the excellent new offers coming to town. We are striving to create a community space with something for all. To do this the offer will need to be diverse and ever changing. Lock29 will naturally evolve with time to keep our offer fresh in response to what the people of Banbury want. I’m delighted to be involved in such a fresh and inspiring development.”

What’s happening now?

The design is complete, inspired by the heritage of the canal-side location and the builders are in. The enabling works beginning is very exciting in the development of Lock29 and soon we will be able to share with you images of the build in progress.

2019 has been a busy, challenging and exciting year for us but 2020 is going to be incredible. Lock29 is a destination that will serve the community of Banbury first, but will also become a place where people travel to experience, and in so doing discover the whole of Banbury and fall in love with the place we are proud to call home.
