Healthy Halloween Treats

Food | Lifestyle

Halloween might look a little different to normal this year. There may not be the usual Halloween parties and children may not get to go trick or treating in the same way as other years.

We want to help you enjoy the wonder of Halloween at home with these yummy ideas for a spooky buffet (shhh… don’t tell anyone they’re healthy too!).

Apple Monsters

You will need:
2 green apples, quartered
Peanut butter
32 sunflower seeds
2-3 strawberries, sliced
16 homemade googly eyes (a bit of white icing with an icing pen dot works great)

How to do it:
1.     Cut the middles out of each apple quarter to make a mouth (don’t worry about neatness – they’re monsters!)
2.     Coat the inside of the mouth with peanut butter
3.     Stick four sunflower seeds into the top of the peanut butter for teeth
4.     Place a slice of strawberry into the mouth for the tongue
5.     Use a blob of peanut butter to stick the eyes on

Scary Smoothie

You will need:
2 cups frozen peaches
¾ cup pumpkin puree
1 frozen banana
1 cup plain yogurt
1 cup milk
Black sharpie pen or black paper, scissors and glue

How to do it:
1.     Draw or stick spooky faces onto plain mugs or cups
2.     Blend all ingredients together in blender

Frankenstein Snack Pots

You will need:
Grapes
Blueberries
Clear cups
Handmade paper googly eyes
Black sharpie

How to do it:
1.     Fill the cups with the grapes (chop some of them to fit them in nicely)
2.     Top with blueberries for some spooky hair
3.     Stick on the googly eyes and draw on a Frankenstein mouth

Witches Broomsticks

You will need:
Carrot sticks
Cucumber sticks
Celery sticks
Cheese (any type or a mix)

How to do it:
1.     Cut the cheese into small rectangles and make slices into one end of the pieces (these are the ends of your broomsticks)
2.     Make a small hollow into the other end of the cheese pieces
3.     Lay the carrot, celery and cucumber sticks out, and place the cheese brooms over the one end

Ghastly Ghost Kebabs

You will need:
Marshmallows
Melon chunks (or any other fruit)
Strawberries (or any other fruit)
Black food colouring
Kebab sticks

How to do it:
1.     Carefully dot two eyes and a ghost mouth onto the marshmallows using the black food colouring
2.     Layer up the kebabs with the marshmallows and fruit chunks

These ideas can be used to spur the imaginations of the whole family into crafting a table full of spooky snacks! Spider crackers, hideous hummus, ghastly green smoothies…the possibilities are endless.
